April is Almost Here

Greetings Everyone,

With April just around the corner it might be a good idea to start thinking about planting your groundcherry and tomatillo this weekend. Last year we found that groundcherries started around this time began to produce ripe fruit near the end of July, and continued through the season.

This is our first year growing tomatillo, so we are unsure about their growth rate, but have found they grow quite quickly in the greenhouse. Recall that tomatillos are self-incompatible, meaning that a single plant will be unable to fertilize itself and pollen from another plant is needed. Therefore, it is a good idea to start a few plants of each variety.

We use soilless potting mix and start our seeds in 6-pack market packs. A good home alternative is plant starter pellets, such as those by Jiffy. You can get them from Amazon, Home Depot, Walmart etc. Remember, germination time may be slower in less optimal conditions (i.e. not in a greenhouse on a heat mat), so patience is key.
