SUMMARY:Regulatory and Consumer Acceptance Issues on the Road to Bringing Gene-Edited Agricultural Products to Market - Gregory Jaffe\, J.D.
DESCRIPTION:JOIN US! SPECIAL SEMINAR \n“Regulatory and Consumer Acceptance Issues on the Road to Bringing Gene-Edited Agricultural Products to Market”\nGregory Jaffe\, J.D. Visiting Professor of Practice\, CALS Director\, Biotechnology Project\, Center For Science In The Public Interest \nWednesday\, October 30th | 11:00 AM BTI Auditorium \nThe road to the market for gene-edited agricultural products will need to address both regulatory and consumer acceptance issues. What type of safety oversight is appropriate for these products likely will not be determined solely by the potential risks of a product\, but also by how those products compare to traditionally bred and genetically engineered products. Consumer acceptance will depend on several factors\, including who benefits from gene-edited products\, the level of transparency surrounding those products\, and the influence of products developed using gene-editing in the health and environmental areas. This talk will explore these issues and provide both a domestic and international view of bumps that may arise in the road to market for gene-edited agricultural products. If you need accommodations to participate in this event\, please contact Amy Yanosh as soon as possible.

SUMMARY:Art at BTI - Color Is A Beautiful Thing: Intersections of Plants and Popular Culture
DESCRIPTION:Art at BTI presents: Color Is A Beautiful Thing: Intersections of Plants and Popular Culture\nby Sarah Gotowka\n \n \n \n \n \n \n Space is limited\, please register here. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Join us for a night of art and science. View the art of Sarah Gotowka\, local fiber artist\, engage with her at a reception and hear a presentation by Sarah and BTI’s Georg Jander. \n \nThrough the juxtaposition of plant-based materials and lyrics from pop songs\, this exhibition explores the roller coaster of romantic relationships. The dry-pressing of flower petals reflects the struggle to preserve the fleeting moments of falling in love\, while the natural dyes of handwoven fiber speaks to the ever changing seasons and currents between two people. \n“How will I know if you really love me?” and “I would die for you\,” are not only homages to two of the artists favorite singers\, but are ephemeral words then materialized into statements of longing and despair. Sarah has been writing and drawing song lyrics since a young girl\, obsessed with making RnB mixtapes. Today\, the act of gluing\, cutting and weaving stands as a mode of catharsis. \nSarah Gotowka\nSarah Gotowka is a visual artist currently living in Trumansburg. She is adopted Korean-Polish-Italian-American\, and grew up in the suburbs of Rochester where she obsessively made mix tapes from 90’s radio airplay and built makeshift forts in the woods. (These factors alone have influenced her art practice immensely.) She received her BFA from The Cleveland Institute of Art majoring in Fiber and Material Studies in 2007\, and graduated with an MFA from Concordia University’s Fiber and Material Practices in 2013. \nSarah helped found The Color Collective\, an initiative to grow sustainable dyes in Montréal without the interference of machines or chemical fertilizers. This collaboration led to the instruction of many workshops at the Concordia University Greenhouse and Montréal Center for Contemporary Textiles\, as well as exhibitions at the Textile Museum of Canada\, the International Symposium & Exhibition on Natural Dyes in LaRochelle\, France\, and at the 13th Biennial Symposium of The Textile Society of America in Washington DC. \nAfter receiving her MFA she moved back to upstate New York and has collaborated with Cornell\, Ithaca College\, The Craftstitute\, New Roots Charter School and The Johnson Museum of Art\, giving various workshops on natural dye plants and textile practices. She has also received grants from The Community Arts Partnership of Tompkins County\, and is currently teaching private weaving lessons. Her dream is to open a non-toxic textile school in Ithaca! \nTo learn more about Sarah’s work\, visit her website and her studio‘s website. \n \nThank you to our event sponsors:

SUMMARY:Special Seminar: Michael Werner ""The epigenetic hills\, valleys\, and consequences of phenotypic plasticity."
DESCRIPTION:Special Seminar \nMichael Werner \nMax Planck Institute for Developmental Biology\, Tübingen \n“The epigenetic hills\, valleys\, and consequences of phenotypic plasticity.”\n\nEarly life experiences can affect the development of physiology\, behavior\, and even morphological structures later in life. While post-translational modifications and non-coding RNAs are capable of transmitting environmental information\, a holistic understanding of environmental influence that places molecular mechanisms in an ecological and evolutionary context is still lacking. I utilize mouth-form plasticity exhibited in the nematode Pristionchis pacificus as a model for investigating environmental influence. Depending on the conditions experienced as juveniles\, an irreversible decision is made in P. pacificus adults to develop either (a) a narrow-mouth bacterial feeding morph\, or (b) a wide-mouthed predatory morph with an extra denticle. The predatory mouth form not only expands the dietary range\, but also is an effective weapon to kill other nematode competitors. To understand how environmental cues are communicated to this developmental “switch” decision\, I employ a wide range of molecular approaches including epigenomic profiling\, mass spectrometry\, and developmental transcriptomics. Finally\, I combine these mechanistic observations with ecological experiments to understand the population biology and functional consequences of both morphs\, and ultimately\, of phenotypic plasticity.” \n \nMonday\, April 15\, 12:20 PM\nMorison Room\, Corson-Mudd \nCo-hosted by the Boyce Thompson Institute and Andy Clark\, Cornell Molecular Biology and Genetics

SUMMARY:From Contigs to Chromosomes: How Hi-C is transforming genome and metagenome assembly
DESCRIPTION:Ivan Liachko\, Ph.D.\, Founder/Chief Scientist\, Phase Genomics\, Inc\, presents From Contigs to Chromosomes: How Hi-C is transforming genome and metagenome assembly. \nChromosome conformation capture methods like Hi-C measure the 3D organization of DNA in vivo using a combination of crosslinking\, proximity-ligation\, and paired-end sequencing. \nBecause this method captures genomic contiguity on intact chromosomes\, the resultant information can be used to generate end-to-end chromosome-scale scaffolds for large genomes\, phase whole chromosomes\, and discover novel genomes in microbiome samples. \nCapturing genomic proximity information in vivo removes several major obstacles in genome and metagenome assembly\, improving the quality and efficiency of genomic discovery efforts. \nDecember 6th\, 2018\n10:00am\nBTI Auditorium

SUMMARY:Giving Tuesday
DESCRIPTION:Tune In Here!\nUnrestricted Futures 2018\nOur planet is rapidly approaching nine billion people and with that rise in population comes serious threats to our food supply and health. At BTI\, our researchers work tirelessly to combat these threats by diving into the deep unknown of the life sciences in search of the discoveries that will allow us to meet the demands that lie ahead. The commitment to this research comes with many expenses and we need you to help fuel the work of our scientists.\nJoin us in supporting research and education at the Boyce Thompson Institute through this year’s Unrestricted Futures Campaign! \nNote for Restricted Gifts\nEffective 10/1/2017: Restricted endowment and program gifts are subject to an indirect cost recovery policy which require that 20% of gift funds be retained by the institute\, to be applied to the costs associated with the specific restricted gift purpose. Restricted gifts below $5\,000 will be subject to a reduced 10% IDC rate.

SUMMARY:Yin and Yang in RNA silencing
DESCRIPTION:Yin and Yang refer to dualities in Chinese philosophy: they describe how seemingly opposite or contrary forces may actually be complementary\, interconnected\, and interdependent on each other. They mean the paradox of simultaneous unity and duality that should be balanced to keep the thing on the right track. \nWhile studying RNA silencing for years\, we have found that Yin and Yang scenarios are widely presented in the regulation of microRNA biogenesis and gene expression. Xiuren Zhang (Texas A&M University) will use the interplay among SWI2/SNF2 complexes\, microprocessor\, and histone methyl-transferase to illustrate this ancient philosophy in biology. \nTuesday\, October 16th | 10:00 AM\nBTI Auditorium \nXiuren is a Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at Texas A&M University.
