DESCRIPTION:Grecian foxglove\, a piece by Elizabeth Morales. \nArt@BTI presents Weeds: Untamed Wonder\, a collection by the Finger Lakes Guild of Natural Science Illustrators. \nThe natural science artists have selected their favorite weeds of the northeast to render in beautiful illustrations. Their exhibit will explain what makes a plant a “weed” and will give information on how to distinguish between local weeds and invasive plants. The collection includes 20 pieces from 15 illustrators from around the Finger Lakes. \nThe exhibit is currently open during business hours and is free and open to the public. \nBTI will also host a reception in early April where participating artists will discuss their inspiration for their work with the public. \n  \nArt@BTI is made possible by Tompkins Trust Company\, with additional support from Hancock Estabrook\, LLC and Cayuga Landscaping.

SUMMARY:Beet Armyworm Invasion—Breeding Better Plants with Natural Diversity
DESCRIPTION:BTI will present at the Cornell Science Sampler Series\, hosted by the Cornell Center for Materials Research. This day-long workshop for middle and high school educators is a collaborative effort to provide teacher professional development in the areas of science\, technology\, engineering\, and math. \nWorkshop Description \nFarmers across the globe rely on pesticides to protect crop yield from insects\, yet natural genetic diversity and plant breeding could help reduce this need. \nIn this workshop\, teachers will learn about the latest research in plant responses to insect damage\, and how a citizen science classroom lab activity can be used to explore plant-insect interactions\, biodiversity\, plant breeding\, research methods\, and more. Plant scientists would like to identify varieties of corn that can withstand damage from the Beet Armyworm (Spodoptera exigua)\, a major agricultural pest for many crops\, better than other varieties\, and are working to understand how this occurs. Because of a high degree of diversity within the corn species\, there is potential for traditional or genetic breeding to produce varieties with natural resistance to insect damage. DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with CDP 2015 Alumna Tom Freeman\, BTI will present the Algae to Energy: Optimizing Systems workshop at the 2016 NABT Professional Development Conference. \nThis workshop will be held at the Denver Sheraton Downtown – Plaza Court 6 from 9:00–10:15 AM on Saturday\, November 5. \nWorkshop Description: \nThe planet is in urgent need of a new source of liquid transportation fuel to meet energy demands\, which are growing faster than researchers can develop renewable technologies! \nScientists are looking at algae as an efficient\, renewable source of fuel. Some algae can accumulate up to 75 percent of their bodyweight as oil and others can double their size in a matter of hours. Some algae can be grown in saltwater\, while others can thrive in municipal wastewater. Still\, challenges remain for optimizing systems for growth\, harvest\, and conversion to biofuel and other valuable bioproducts. \nIn this workshop\, teachers will learn about the potential for using algae as a source of biofuel\, and how a classroom lab activity to engineer growth systems can be used to teach about renewable energy\, genetic engineering\, photosynthesis\, experiment design\, and more.

DESCRIPTION:Join scientists and educators at BTI for the Fall STEM Teacher Workshop on October 7–8! \nTeachers will join BTI educators and scientists for this weekend workshop to discover and create effective plant biology curriculum. \nHosted by BTI’s Education and Outreach Programs\, this 1.5-day workshop will highlight topics studied in BTI research labs. This workshop is an opportunity for teachers (Grades 7–12 and Community College) to learn from expert researchers in plant science\, work with BTI to develop new classroom materials in collaboration with other STEM educators\, and provide feedback about BTI classroom labs and professional programs. You will experience hands-on lab activities and curriculum design\, tours of the research labs\, seminars with BTI faculty\, and plenty of time to collaborate with your fellow teachers. \nDue to the short length of this workshop\, this opportunity is most suitable for teachers based in New York State or within about a 200-mile radius of Ithaca. Participants can receive up to $200 to offset the costs of travel. \nApply for this workshop here.

DESCRIPTION:Grecian foxglove\, a piece by Elizabeth Morales. \nArt@BTI presents Weeds: Untamed Wonders\, a collection by the Finger Lakes Guild of Natural Science Illustrators.\nThe natural science artists have selected their favorite weeds of the northeast to render in beautiful illustrations. Their exhibit will explain what makes a plant a “weed” and will give information on how to distinguish between local weeds and invasive plants. The collection includes 20 pieces from 15 illustrators from around the Finger Lakes. \nThe exhibit is free and open to the public between the hours of 8 am – 5 pm (M – F)\, in the atrium of Boyce Thompson Institute. Download map. \nBTI will also host a reception on March 30th from 5-7pm where guests can meet the artists\, enjoy refreshments\, and tour the greenhouse.
